Taxi Bill debated in Stormont

26 February, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan, who is Vice Chair of the Environment Committee in the Stormont Assembly has broadly welcomed the next stage for consideration of the Taxis Bill debated in the chamber today.

Mr Boylan said:

"After 17 weeks of detailed scrutiny, the Bill has taken shape. I would just like to pay tribute to the Committee members, Committee staff and thank all those Stakeholders who made submissions orally and in writing throughout this process.

"At the outset the Committee agreed to a commitment to allow as many interested parties as possible to make submissions and I feel we have honoured that commitment and afforded the opportunity to as many groups and individuals as wished to be included.

"One of the major issues the vast majority of those who addressed the Committee raised was the issue of Enforcement. There are at present only 5 Enforcement Officers in the Six counties to deal with an industry of at least 11,000 vehicles. We have called upon the Minister to address this issue as a matter of priority to inspire confidence within the industry and allow this legislation to be implemented to full effect." ENDS
