EU must review restriction procedures following Bluetongue detection - de Brún MEP

15 February, 2008

Responding to the breaking news that Bluetongue disease has been detected in Ireland for the first time following routine post-import testing undertaken by the Department for Agriculture and Rural Development, Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún called for the EU to immediately review its procedures on cattle import restrictions.

Ms de Brún said:

"This news will cause concern to the general public and farming community.

"What is needed now is action.

"I am calling for the EU to immediately review its procedures on cattle import restrictions that are in place to ensure that they are sufficient to prevent further bluetongue from arriving on the island of Ireland.

"In light of this news, I believe there must be a change to the EU restrictions currently in place on cattle imports from Blue Tongue virus zones." Críoch
