Boylan welcomes BIC statement on Road Safety issues

27 February, 2008

Commenting after First Minister Ian Paisley's speech on the recent meeting of the British - Irish Council, Sinn Fein Road Safety spokesperson in the Six counties, Cathal Boylan, has welcomed the commitment to introduce mutual recognition of driving disqualifications between North and South as soon as possible.

Mr Boylan said:

"Sinn Fein has been consistent in saying Road Safety concerns are an all island issue and more co operation is required. The mutual recognition of driving disqualification, plus the recognition of penalty points is a step in the right direction to ensuring our vision of a proper All Ireland Road Safety policy is fulfilled.

"I also welcome the potential to share research and provide joined up campaigns on drink and drug driving as well as publicity strategies for Road Safety initiatives.

"I once again reiterate, the grief caused by a death or serious injury in a road traffic accident does not recognise an invisible border, neither should we then recognise it when trying to curtail the carnage on our roads." ENDS
