Corporate manslaughter legislation must be introduced – Morgan
Sinn Féin Workers Rights Spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called for the introduction of Corporate Manslaughter legislation after a worker died on a building site at Dublin Airport this morning.
He said, "The tragic death of a worker at a Dublin Airport building site this morning brings to seven the number of workplace fatalities so far in 2008. That's seven too many.
"Without trying to pre-empt the outcome of investigations into the man's death I want to repeat Sinn Féin's call for corporate manslaughter legislation to be introduced. For too long irresponsible employers have got off with small fines when they have been at fault for the death of a worker.
"Corporate manslaughter legislation is urgently required to ensure that all employers fully comply with health and safety regulations. If we continue without such legislation some employers will continue to cut corners ultimately leading to further deaths in work places throughout the state." ENDS
