Oireachtas Irish language committee passes motion in support of Lá Nua - Doherty
Donegal Sinn Féin Senator Pearse Doherty has had a motion passed in the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sports, Tourism, Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs which recognises the importance of the Irish Language Newspaper Lá Nua and calls on all Government Departments to advertise in it if appropriate.
Speaking after the motion was passed Senator Doherty said, "Lá Nua provides an essential service to Irish Language speakers throughout the Island on a daily basis.
"The paper has recently been struggling financially and earlier this month was in danger of closing down altogether. Thanks to a number of initiatives which the paper has taken it now looks as if the paper is safe for the next year at least.
"The motion, which I proposed and was passed today, calls on all Government Departments to advertise in Lá Nua when appropriate. Advertisements from Government Departments play a significant roll in supporting most Irish papers. Government Departments regularly advertise in some Irish papers in both English and Irish. There is absolutely no reason why they cannot advertise in Lá Nua and provide essential support to the Irish Language newspaper also.
"Irish language speakers are entitled to have their news delivered to them in their native tongue just as English speakers have theirs in English. Therefore this paper should be supported as other papers are by having equal access to advertising from Government Departments." ENDS
