Minister challenged over lack of cash for Housing Executive repairs

3 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Housing Spokesperson, Fra McCann MLA, (West Belfast) has challenged the Housing Minister, Margaret Ritchie to explain why she failed to bid for money, during the December Monitoring Round, after it emerged that the Housing Executive had run out of money to carry out essential repairs.

Fra McCann said:

"The Finance Minister, Peter Robinson, in response to a Sinn Féin Question in the Assembly this Morning, confirmed that 'no bid was received for additional funds for the Housing Executive'.

"Minister Ritchie needs to explain why she did not to bid for the extra resources that are required for essential repairs to Housing Executive homes.

"Margaret Ritchie knew that the Housing Executive was facing this crisis which has seen all but emergency repairs totally suspended. This also includes new tenants, forcing a delay for many people waiting to move into a home.

"The question is whether Margaret Ritchie is just not aware of what is going on or has she been misled by her officials about this issue?" ENDS
