Empey must protect training programme
Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey, who is the Chairperson of the Assembly Employment and Learning Committee, has said that it has been evident for some time that the company Carter and Carter was not able to deliver the training is was supposed to.
Sinn Féin have raised concerns about the failure of Carter and Carter to deliver the training for automotive trainees after it was awarded the contract to in relation to the Training for Success programme.
Speaking after it was confirmed that Carter and carter had terminated its' contract to supply this training, Ms Ramsey said:
"The committee has been scrutinizing the early roll out of the Training for Success programme. The issue of Carter and Carter's inability to deliver a critical aspect of the training emerged early in our scrutiny.
"It has been a continual source of concern for both Sinn Fein and the committee and has been a focus of discussions with the Department. It is clear that the failure to deliver on this part of the contract meant that a large number of young people were being failed and ultimately this outcome was inevitable.
"Sinn Fein have particularly voiced concerns about the decline in young people securing manufacturing-related apprenticeships in places such as Derry and publicly called for a review of the Training for Success delivery scheme.
"Reg Empey and the Department need to move quickly to set out how it will move forward and limit the damage that has been done so far." ENDS
