Sinn Féin hit out at SDLP support for DUP motion
Sinn Féin MLA Paul Butler has slammed Lisburn council for a motion calling on Education Minister Caitríona Ruane to resign.
Mr Butler said that this motion shows clearly that the DUP, UUP and SDLP are playing political games with the future of our children's education.
"Nationalists will, be particularly disappointed that SDLP Councilor Brian Heading seconded this resignation motion. His party claims to oppose academic selection yet when it comes to this debate the SDLP are slavishly trotting in behind the DUP in their campaign to block the Education Minister's reform programme. In effect the DUP are leading the other political parties by the nose.
The Sinn Fein councillor and party Education spokesperson continued:
"I think it is disgraceful that the SDLP in Lisburn are happy to support the DUP's attempts to oppose an end to academic selection - a system that has caused so much inequality and unhappiness for those children who passed through it.
"By supporting this motion, the SDLP in Lisburn are nailing their colours to the mast in opposing the Education Minister's attempts to develop a new education system, not based on the unjust system of academic selection at eleven, but on the best interests of all children." ENDS
