Morgan to attend SIPTU campaign meeting in Mullingar
Sinn Féin TD and spokesperson on Workers' Rights Arthur Morgan will tonight attend a regional SIPTU campaign meeting on Agency Workers in Mullingar. Speaking in advance on the meeting Morgan said Sinn Féin would be keeping up the pressure on the Government to legislate for equal rights for agency workers and that the party is fully behind the union campaign led by SIPTU.
Morgan said, "Just a fortnight ago, Sinn Féin and Labour joined forces in the Dáil to put the issue of agency workers on the Government's agenda. We will not tolerate any further Government delays in addressing this crucial issue.
"While we await legislation, agency workers are being exploited. They are paid less and receive less conditions and entitlements than directly employed workers, yet do the same work. The fact that employers can get away with treating them so badly has led to their increased use and casualisation and displacement of workers has taken hold in our work places.
"At our party Ard Fheis last weekend, I was joined in highlighting the problem by UNITE President Jimmy Kelly, who addressed the conference. I am pleased to be working with the trade union movement on this vital issue. I attended the SIPTU meeting in Dublin and Waterford and was delighted to see how well attended they were. This campaign is growing in momentum and Sinn Féin will play its part in increasing the pressure on the Government to legislate for the principle of equal treatment for agency workers. " ENDS
