Next step in delivering vision for future of education system

4 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Paul Butler has welcomed today's statement from the Education Minister Caitríona Ruane setting the next steps in the transformation of the education system.

Mr Butler said:

"Caitríona Ruane has set out clearly the next steps in taking forward the reform of our education system. Setting out the criteria for Area Based Planning and the announcement of the five new local groups and a sixth overall body that will take this forward within a set timeframe will focus energies on achieving progress.

"It is now essential that we get away from the political negativity of those who want to retain a system that fails so many of our children and get proper engagement, particularly in local communities, with these new bodies.

"I look forward to a positive and constructive discussion about this within the Assembly Education Committee.

"With 50,000 empty school desks and thousands of children failed every single year by the current system it is essential that we develop the relationships between all of the different sectors so that children in every local community can access the fullest range of courses and options." ENDS
