O’Neill appointed Chair of new All Party Working Group on Disability to champion rights of disabled people
Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Michelle O'Neill has been appointed the joint chair of the All Party Working Group on Disability along with Monica Wilson of Disability Action following the inaugural meeting of the group today (Tuesday) in the Assembly.
Coming on the new All Party Working Group Michelle O'Neill said:
"I am delighted to take on the position of chair of the All party working group on disability. In moving forward our newly formed group plans to become a champion for disability issues in the time ahead.
"More focus needs to be given to disability issues, for too long the silo mentality of government departments has disadvantaged people with disabilities.
"I can assure all stakeholders that we in the group intend to invite along all those within the disability sector to work with us to identify key disability issues which this assembly needs to address.
"Monica Wilson, from Disability Action has kindly agreed to work closely with the group to ensure that we have representation across the disability sector. I would thank her for all her help in developing the group.
"There is an onus on the assembly and the executive to explore what steps should be taken in order to ensure that the rights and entitlements of disabled people are guaranteed and respected at every levels of society." ENDS
