Anger at Assembly Commission ban on Women’s Day event
Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has described the decision by the DUP, UUP, Alliance Party and SDLP on the Assembly Commission to ban an International Women's Day Event in the Long Gallery at Stormont as unfair and undemocratic.
Ms McCann said:
"We are very disappointed that an event to pay tribute to Mairead Farrell for International Women's Day has been banned from the Long Gallery.
"The decision is unfair and undemocratic. The building at Stormont is supposed to be a shared public space for everyone.
"All of the other parties on the Assembly Commission, the SDLP, the Alliance Party, the UUP and DUP all blocked this event to mark International Women's Day.
"The party will be meeting in the morning to discuss our response to this decision.
"If the building at Stormont cannot be a shared space that reflects the history and culture of all the people in society then it must become a neutral space. It cannot continue to reflect one tradition and one culture." ENDS
