"Irish language Sinn Féin Cumainn a positive development" - Brolly MLA‏

7 March, 2008

Welcoming new Sinn Féin cumainn throughout Ireland, Sinn Féin Irish language spokesperson Francie Brolly MLA has said that this is a positive development and part of Sinn Féin's policy to continue to make Irish the daily working language of the party, rather than an attempt to politicise the language.

Mr Brolly said,

"Yesterday, Sinn Féin launched a new Sinn Féin cumann in Dublin. Next Tuesday Gerry Adams shall launch another cumann in Belfast. More cumann will be launched throughout the country.

"I am proud to announce this wonderful venture and view it is part of Sinn Féin's policy to continue to make Irish the daily working language of the party.

"The Belfast cumann will be launched (11 March 7.30pm, Cultúrlann) in honour of Volunteer Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh who was killed by British agents 20 years ago this week.

"Like hundreds of other Sinn Féin cumann throughout the country, the Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh cumann will campaign on local and national issues.

"The difference is that they will debate, lobby and campaign while using Irish as their first language.

"It is apt to name the cumann after Caoimhín Mac Brádaigh as he was a Gaeilgeoir and an inspirational figure who has an immense love for the language and there is no attempt through this project to politicise the language.

"I believe young people today should become active in the language. The launch of these new cumainn is an example of this." Críoch
