Poots attendance at Irish language event a welcome first step - Ní Chuilín MLA

7 March, 2008

Commenting on the news that Culture Minister Edwin Poots shall attend a POBAL Irish language event for the first time, Sinn Féin party whip Carál Ní Chuilín has said that this is a welcome first step but must not be a 'one - off'.

Ms Ní Chuilín said,

"Edwin Poots, as Culture Minister, has responsibilities for Irish speakers.

"The Minister's attendance at this event in the Europa hotel today is a welcome first step.

"But it must not be a one-off.

"There is a lot of scepticism regarding the Minister's commitment to the Irish language and in the context of equality he must show leadership on this issue.

"Sinn Féin will continue to campaign for an Irish language Act.

"Tá dualgaisí ag an Aire.

"Tá sceipteachas ag pobal na Gaeilge maidir lena tiomantas don Ghaeilge agus tionantas do cearta. Ta sceipteachas ann fosta i ndiaidh a ráiteas i gcoinne reachtaíocht don Ghaeilge ar na mallaibh fosta.

"Caithfidh an tAire ceannasaíocht láidir a thaispeáint." Críoch
