Derry Ógra Shinn Féin remember 20th Anniversary of the events of Gibraltar/Milltown
On Thursday March 6th, the 20th Anniversary of the Gibraltar/Milltown , Derry Ógra Shinn Féin held a showing of the recently produced film on the tragic events of 20 years ago.
Belfast Republican, Seán Murray spoke about the significance of the events surrounding Gibraltar and formally launched the film in Derry. This was followed by Ógra activist Aoife McNaught reading out a statement for International Women's Day.
Mitchel McLaughlin MLA was also a guest at the event.
Speaking following the event, Chairperson of Doire Ógra, Niall Doran said,
"We were greatly encouraged by the large turn out of young people at the launch of this film .The film was very emotive and informative, an excellent education on the Gibraltar 3 and the events that took place in Milltown Cemetery and around the funerals in days following .
"I, like many others attending the screening of the film , were not even born when the tragic events of Gibraltar and Milltown happened. Tragedies like these make us as republican youth, proud to remember the sacrifice of those brave people, and it makes us realise the ferocity of state violence and unionist death squads that was directed at our community only 20 years ago. These events are to remember, to find the truth and always point towards the future .The past must not repeat itself
"The events of that time and the people that we lost did not deter republicans then and it certainly doesn't deter us now. We are proud to remember those who lost their lives; their legacy is and will continue to inspire us and make us determined to work towards everything they died for, justice, equality and freedom."
