McLaughlin voices concern at fish kill

10 March, 2008

Sinn Fein's Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has voiced serious concern at the latest fish kill in Antrim Rivers caused by pollutants.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"I call on Environment and Heritage Service's Water Quality Service to ensure that its investigation into this latest fish kill in Antrim's rivers is both exhaustive and conclusive.

"The source of the pollutants must be uncovered and firm measures put in place to ensure that in the case of it being an accidental occurrence that it does not happen again. In the event that it is proven that it was deliberate or negligent then severe sanctions should be taken against the polluter.

"I sympathise with environmentalists and conservationists who invest their time and energy to ensure that our loughs and rivers are maintained for the enjoyment of all. I call on the Environment Minister, Arlene Foster to ensure that every assistance is given in cleaning up this pollution and restocking of these rivers." ENDS
