SELB ‘lost’ files highlights issues of responsibility
Sinn Féin Newry Armagh MLA Mickey Brady has welcomed the statement from the Education Minister Caitríona Ruane on the confidential SELB files 'discovered' in Camlough and said that it highlights the important issue of responsibility.
Mr Brady said:
"Clearly mistakes were made in the storage of these confidential and sensitive personal files and clearly there are very serious issues about the handling of these files that resulted from them being 'discovered' in Camlough.
"I very much welcome the unequivocal statement from the Education Minister today.
"However, I share the concerns of many of those families that may have been affected about this information ending up in the public domain and particularly concerns that many copies of these documents may have been made and supplied to the media.
"The Minister has accepted responsibility and made an apology on behalf of the Board. The SELB has accepted responsibility and aplogised. It is now up to those responsible for copying this confidential sensitive personal information to be honest about how many copies were made and who they were distributed to. This issue is a matter of huge concern to the families affected by this serious breakdown in the handling of confidential information.
"It is now essential that we put in place strict guidelines to cover how Education Library Board employees and Board members deal with confidential information. This includes adherence to the policy for dealing with whistle blowing information from the public." ENDS
