Minister announces pregnancy
Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development has announced that she is expecting her third child in mid October.
The Minister has already two boys, Emmet, who will be six in April and Eunan who will be three in June.
The Minister said:
"I am delighted to share the news that I am expecting a third child in October. I am already blessed with two beautiful boys who are very much looking forward to meeting the latest addition. I don't know if it's a boy or girl - and don't mind just as long as it's a healthy child.
"All women feel special when they are pregnant but I understand that I am one of the few "expecting" Ministers in the history of the island of Ireland - and the first in the devolved administrations - so this makes this time both unique and special.
"I hope to continue working throughout most of my pregnancy, as I did when I was an MP and I was pregnant with my other children. However, not surprisingly, I will take some time off when my new one arrives. I will discuss the practicalities of this with the Department over the coming months.
"In the meantime, it's very much business as usual. I am especially looking forward to the publication of the Rural Childcare Report I initiated. This will look at some of the barriers to childcare in rural areas and will suggest how women in rural areas, who wish to return to paid work, might have the opportunity to do so. I am very fortunate to have the chance to combine public service with raising a young family - and I am on a mission to ensure more women have the chance to balance both their work and family commitments."
