Gun culture must be tackled head on – Ó Snodaigh

11 March, 2008

Speaking in the Dáil today Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD raised serious concerns over increased gun crimes including two recent murders over the past week. Deputy Ó Snodaigh again called on the Government to expedite a robust process of civilianisation of as many administrative and other appropriate tasks as possible in order to free-up fully trained Gardaí to fight serious drug and gun crime.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "There is an urgent need for the Government to tackle the ongoing rise in gun deaths and gun threats. Two killings took place over the weekend, one of a man in his house in Newcastle the other, another man, shot outside in the open in Clondalkin.

"Also in the past week alone there were two incidents where the lives of customers and bar staff alike were threatened by gunmen one in Limerick on Sunday evening the other in my own Constituency of Chapelizod today. Thankfully in both these incidents the men were disarmed with no shots fired.

"This increase in gun crime must be tackled head on with all available resources. The Government must expedite a robust process of civilianisation of as many administrative and other appropriate tasks as possible in order to free-up fully trained Gardaí to fight serious drug and gun crime." ENDS
