de Brún calls for recognition of "invisible" rural women

12 March, 2008

Sinn Féin's Six County MEP Bairbre de Brún has backed calls for greater recognition of the role of women in rural areas particularly the "invisible workers" who maintain much of our rural economy.

Speaking as the EU Parliament debated a resolution on the situation of rural women in the EU, Ms de Brún pointed out the unfairness of a system where the male member of the household is often considered by law as the only worker on a farm.

Ms de Brún said:

"What this means is that the role of women as part of family farms is not fairly recognised. This is more than a symbolic point as it can have major legal ramifications in terms of pension rights and welfare entitlement sin some cases.

"I am also heartened by the backing of MEPs for the need to have public services such as doctors and postal services available in rural communities as a necessity for the preservation of our rural communities." Críoch
