Doubts Cast Over Climate Targets

13 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on the Environment, Martin Ferris TD has said that more needs to be done if the targets set for bringing about climate change are to be met. The Kerry North TD was speaking as EU Prime Ministers met in Brussels to agree measures to achieve the target for reducing harmful emissions by 20%.

Deputy Ferris said: "While I welcome the proposals to meet the set targets there are serious doubts that what is being done at present is sufficient to ensure that they will be met. It is interesting that the Irish Government is questioning the targets set by the EU for this country given that they have already set targets for renewable sources that were higher than the EU average.

"That begs the question as to whether the targets being set are practical. I've raised this question previously in relation to domestic targets and proposed that we need an annual review to assess whether we are on track, and if not to assess what more needs to be done. I have also questioned whether enough resources are being invested in for example wind and tidal energy research and production to ensure that the substantial potential that exists in that sector will be realised."
