de Brún raises plight of Hydebank prisoners in Strasbourg

13 March, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún will today raise the issue of the poor conditions for women prisoners in the north in a speech today in Strasbourg.

The parliament is to discuss a report on the social situation of women in prisons across the EU. Ms de Brún plans to draw the attention of MEPs and the European Commission to the abysmal conditions faced by women prisoners in the north as outlined by Professor Phil Scraton and Dr. Linda Moore by stating:

"A report came out in 2004 and another last year describing appalling conditions for ordinary women prisoners in my own constituency, the North of Ireland. I would urge the Commission to read the recommendations of those reports alongside the recommendations of this one. Sinn Féin has been very active in fighting for the rights of women prisoners with my Assembly colleague Jennifer McCann visiting Hydebank prison last October."

Ms de Brún has tabled a number of amendments to the report based on a knowledge of the effects of poor conditions as seen in the north. Amongst other recommendations, de Brún will push for the European Parliament to call for an end to the detention of children in adult prisons. Críoch
