UUP sectarian response to RPA challenged

13 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Assembly group leader, John O'Dowd MLA has said that some of the initial comments from the UUP in reaction to today's announcement of agreement on the 11 Council model expose the sectarian underbelly of a party that fails to recognise that it has no supreme right to rule and that it is the electorate that decide who represents them.

Mr O'Dowd said:

"The comments of some UUP spokespeople responding to the announcement on the shake-up of local government are a disgrace.

"Fred Cobain's view of Belfast, for example, clearly exposes the sectarian and undemocratic underbelly of a party that fails to recognise that it has no supreme right to rule.

"One of the fundamental issues for Sinn Fein is a legal framework that protects minorities from the sort of abuse of power by unionists in councils such as Belfast.

"It is the electorate who decide who represents them whether at local government or any other level. Any political party forgets that its own peril." ENDS
