Chivers – Have your say on Equality
Sinn Féin Deputy Mayor of Limavady Brenda Chivers chaired a public consultation last Friday on the draft Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA) at Sinn Féin's Dungiven Advice Center.
Speaking after the meeting Cllr Chivers said:
"Now that the Executive has set out in detail the plans and priorities in the Programme for Government (PfG), the Investment Strategy and the Budget for 2008/09 and beyond a draft EQIA report has been launched for public consultation. The closing date for consultation is Wednesday 23 April 2008.
"It is absolutely crucial that local people engage in this consultation and record local issues which so often in the past have been ignored particularly west of the Bann by Civil Servants. Sinn Féin will demand equality to protect the rights of minorities and prevent direct and indirect discrimination. To promote this campaign we are holding a number of public meetings across the North to make the public aware of this important issue.
"We were delighted at the cross community representation at the meeting in Dungiven and we have agreed to invite a senior Civil Servant to a follow up public meeting in Dungiven, the date of which will be confirmed next week.
"This will be an opportunity for individual members of the public and representatives of both the voluntary and the business community to make their voice heard.
"Sinn Féin will advise how groups could be best engaged during the consultation process and any other issues that have not yet been addressed. We will ensure that everyone's views are taken on board." ENDS
