McLaughlin welcomes OFCOM proposals to combat Mobile phone mis-selling
Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin MLA (South Antrim) has welcomed OFCOM's proposals to combat Mobile phone mis-selling.
Mitchel McLaughlin said:
"The fact that the number of complaints about unacceptable marketing practices in the Mobile phone market actually increased following a warning from OFCOM that unless the industry took measures to eradicate these abuses it would take regulatory action leaves the Regulator with no choice but to act.
"It is imperative that the public be given precise and understandable information when they enter into a contract with any service provider. Mobile phones are now as much of a necessary requirement as they used to be a fashion statement with sales continuing to spiral. Like everything else the more popular a commodity becomes the more open to abuse through unethical marketing it becomes.
"This is evident in the mobile phone industry with the almost doubling of complaints about shady practices from the public between 2007 and 2008.
"This proposal for legally enforceable regulations to eliminate inaccurate information when a person is entering into a mobile phone contract or being induced to purchase through some "cash back" promotions offered by sales agents where they fail to reimburse the consumer is therefore necessary and welcome."
