Doherty calls for full public disclosure about MoD profits from demilitarized site sales
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has called on the British Ministry of Defence to make a full public disclosure about what profits it has secured from the sale of demilitarized sites across the six counties after he revealed that he is still awaiting answers to this and other related questions he submitted to the MoD under the Freedom of Information Act more than three months ago.
Pat Doherty said:
"The British government, through the MoD, has been acting with great haste in recent times in trying to sell off as many sites as possible across the six counties- that its forces occupied from the early 70s until their recent demilitarization.
"Many of these sites were appropriated through compulsory vesting orders and despite having incurred little financial outlay in the intervening years the British government are now determined to sell off these vacated military sites at full market value so as to maximise financial gain for the MOD and the British Exchequer.
"On the 6th December I submitted a series of questions to the British Ministry of Defence, under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, seeking information about what profits it has secured up to this point from the sale of these sites and other related questions (See questions below).
"However, despite having received a letter from the MoD Defence Estates on the 8 January stating that a response to my FOI request was being prepared and should be with me 'shortly,'-this promised response remains elusive more than three months on.
"Given the continuing failure of the British government to deliver a genuine Peace Dividend to compensate for the year of neglect it presided over in the six counties I believe that the answers to these FoI questions will be of major public interest to people here.
"I would therefore now call on the British Ministry of Defence to make a full public disclosure about what profits it has secured from the sale of demilitarized sites across the six counties. ENDS
