Foley must continue to be subject to the most stringent of monitoring mechanisms - Doherty

20 March, 2008

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says that Eamon Foley, as a convicted level 3 sex offender, must be subject to the most stringent of monitoring mechanisms and punitive sanctions available within the law namely a Sex Offenders Prevention Order (SOPO).

He said,

"The facts of the matter are that while Eamon Foley has served his custodial sentence and while he is contesting his conviction, he has nonetheless been categorized as a Level 3 Sex Offender.

"Given the tragic consequences of failings in the system in the cases of Robert Howard and Trevor Hamilton who were similarly categorized as posing the highest level of threat to the community, Sinn Fein believe that he must be subject to the most stringent of monitoring mechanisms and punitive sanctions available within the law namely a Sex Offenders Prevention Order (SOPO), so as to ensure that the community are offered the fullest possible protection and assurance.

"With Eamon Foley's arrival in Gortin and since he subsequently moved to Seegronan Road outside Killeter, Sinn Féin has been in constant contact with the Sex Offenders Strategic Management Committee relaying the many local concerns about the situation and seeking to ensure that sufficiently robust measures are in place that are capable of dealing with his presence in both areas."
