Taoiseach’s refusal to answer correspondence on northern citizens, voting rights a disgrace
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has said that the Irish Governments response to northern citizens' calls for Presidential voting rights is 'nothing short of second class'. Both the Taoiseach and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, have consistently not responded to letters from Mr McKay on the issue for the past 15 months.
Mr McKay said:
"Now that Fianna Fail have indicated that they are going to start organising in the North they should at least recognise the rights of northern citizens to vote in Presidential elections.
"I have consistently written to both the Taoiseach and the Minister for Foreign Affairs on this matter for the past 15 months and whilst both Ministers' Departments have sent acknowledgement letters, neither have followed up or responded to the issue of Presidential voting rights'.
"If the Taoiseach is a republican, as he would have us all believe, why does his government consistently refuse to answer letters regarding this issue of Presidential Voting rights for the Irish Citizens in the North?" ENDS
