McElduff welcomes €30 million JP McManus Scholarship Fund

20 March, 2008

Sinn Féin MLA for West Tyrone, Barry McElduff has welcomed the €30 million funding of an all-Ireland Scholarship fund by Irish racehorse owner and well known Philanthropist J P MCManus.

Barry McElduff said:

"I welcome this very generous contribution by J P McManus to the future educational prospects of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds from across Ireland. These scholarships will enable young people from every county in Ireland who would otherwise have been unable for financial reasons to access third level education.

"J P McManus is known internationally as a race horse owner but is also recognised as a leading Philanthropist who has assisted many worthy causes in Ireland particularly in his native Limerick where dozens of projects have benefited from his generosity.

"There is no investment that will provide such a worthwhile dividend as investment in the education of our youth. Ireland boasts the creation of more millionaires per head during the years of the Celtic Tiger than any other country in the world. I hope that even a small percentage of them will show the social conscience displayed by J P McManus by reinvesting in our best national resource - our youth.

"I look forward to the conclusion of the discussions between the Department of Learning and Employment in the North and the South's Department of Education in determining how the Scholarships will be disbursed in the North." ENDS
