Housing Executive now in jeopardy - McCann MLA

26 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Fra McCann MLA has expressed his concern over the news of 450 job losses in the Housing Executive and has said this crisis will affect those most in need.

Mr McCann said,

"60 temporary jobs have already been lost and the news that further jobs will be lost is a serious blow to this sector and to the employees themselves.

"I have been contacted by many people who are asking for help on this matter. Housing Executive employees that I have spoken to are concerned and afraid for their future.

"The Trade Unions are correct to voice their anger also.

"This crisis will affect the homeless sector and the maintenance sector. It shall therefore have an impact on those most in need.

"I believe this move is putting the Housing Executive in jeopardy. Is this the start of the demise of the Housing Executive?

"I would urge the Housing Minister to intervene immediately.

"Margaret Ritchie must outline what measures shall be put in place to secure these jobs and introduce measures to address yet another crisis under her watch, as soon as possible." Críoch
