Molloy to attend Civil Rights event

27 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Mid Ulster MLA Francie Molloy will attend the Civil Rights 1968 Commemoration Committee reception tonight, Thursday 27trh March, at 6pm in the Linenhall Library.

Speaking ahead of the event Mr Molloy said:

"As we reflect on the 40th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Movement it is clear that we still have work to do develop and enshrine a human rights culture in the north.

"The Bill of Rights process is ongoing and we are determined to see the full range of socio-economic rights established including the right to housing.

"The strength of the Civil Rights Movement is that people from across the political spectrum came together to demand basic rights for nationalists, including many republicans, socialists and people with no overt political affiliation as well as individuals who went on to become involved with the SDLP

"The attempt by the SDLP to lay claim to ownership of the Civil Rights campaign is a total disgrace.

"Politicians who made a career out of claims to have been the mainstay of the Civil Rights Campaign to the exclusion of all others are now intent on hijacking the 40th Anniversary commemorations by excluding those who did not follow their political agenda. However, rather than an attempt the represent the truth of the fight for Civil Rights there are some who now appear, without any sense of shame, to want to hijack this for narrow party political gain."
