Sinn Féin Welcomes ESB Plan
The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Energy, Martin Ferris TD has welcomed today's announcement by the ESB that said that it is to spend €22 billion over the next period on infrastructural projects designed to reduce the level of carbon emissions by 50% by 2020 with a target of eventual elimination by 2035. Half of the spend will be devoted to renewable energy sources such as wave, tidal and biomass.
Deputy Ferris said: "While I have been critical in the past of the apparent gap between official targets and actual practical steps towards their achievement, there is no doubt but that today's announcement is highly significant. In addressing these issues in the past I have pointed to the low level of state investment in areas such as wind and tidal energy and am pleased to see that this seems set to increase dramatically. This is the sort of capital project that is required if the ambitious targets set are to be achieved." ENDS
