Anger at further illegal dumping

28 March, 2008

Sinn Féin Slieve Gullion Councillor Packie McDonald has said that the cost and the amount of extra working hours needed to clear up the mess and environmental hazards being created by incidents of unlawful rubbish dumping is on the rise all the time.

He was making his comments after visiting two sites in the Flagstaff area, where further there has been dumping of materials, including what the Councillor described as potentially harmful toxic waste.

The Newry and Mourne Councillor said:

"Those who illegally dump their waste throughout this area care little about the community and the serious potential for harming both people and the environment because of these selfish acts.

"This is costing Newry and Mourne Council many tens of thousands of pounds, of ratepayers money, to clean up the thousands of tonnes of household and industrial waste that are being dumped illegally at sites throughout our area.

"Illegal dumping is wrong and must be tackled effectively." ENDS
