Rathfarnham cannabis seizure welcomed - Sinn Féin

28 March, 2008

South Dublin Sinn Féin representative Shaun Tracey has welcomed the seizure of €200,000 worth of herbal cannabis in Rathfarnham yesterday evening. Speaking today Mr. Tracey called for resources for the Garda Drugs Squads to be at least doubled and said while the state is awash with cocaine it is essential that Gardaí continue to target dealers of cannabis.

He said, "The seizure of cannabis in Edmondstown is a welcome development and adds to the increased seizures of drugs that Gardaí are experiencing recently. However, it must be noted that increased seizures of drugs are directly related to the increased prevalence of drugs.

"Sinn Féin in South Dublin is acutely aware of the prevalence of drugs in the Rathfarnham area. The party recently conducted a survey in the Whitechurch Estate during which many residents complained of open drug dealing and abuse. I have been in touch with local Gardaí and asked them to increase patrols in the area particularly at night time.

"While the state is awash with cocaine it would be easy for our under resourced Garda Drugs Squads to concentrate on tackling these dealers and forget about those dealing in other drugs such a cannabis. However, it is essential that Gardaí continue to target these dealers.

"While many people view cannabis as a relatively harmless drug it makes huge profits for ruthless drug barons and is directly linked to drug crime including the ongoing shootings and killings which are witnessed all too often on our streets in recent times.

"However, if we are to expect the Gardaí to have any major impact on the supply of these drugs then they must be adequately resourced to do so. This is why Sinn Féin has called for resources for the Garda Drug Squads to be at least doubled in the face of this most recent drugs epidemic. I echo that call today." ENDS
