Linfield supporters cause havoc

29 March, 2008

Sinn Féin West Belfast MLA, Paul Maskey has laid the blame for today's violence in Castle Street on a group of Linfield supporters.

Mr Maskey said:

"The responsibility for the violence in Castle Street today in which one person was stabbed in the neck with a bottle lies solely with a group of 20-30 Linfield supporters who came into the area equipped for trouble. It was not a case of two gangs confronting each other as has been reported by some media outlets.

"The Linfield supporters, some of them wearing knuckle dusters launched unprovoked attacks on people in Castle Street, even entering a bar and attacking customers. One person was stabbed in the neck and taken to hospital.

"I am also very critical of the handling of the situation by the PSNI who should have been able act much more quickly as the area is covered by CCTV. I will be insisting that the PSNI use CCTV to identify the culprits and bring them before the Courts. When identified Linfield Football Club should also take resolute action against these so-called supporters." ENDS
