Anderson welcomes Bishop Hegarty Statement

1 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Derry MLA Martina Anderson has welcomed the statement by Bishop Séamus Hegarty expressing the Church's support for equality for all children in accessing education.

Martina Anderson said:

"Bishop Séamus Hegarty's statement on post primary education was forthright and precise in its description of academic selection as 'no longer tenable on educational and ethical grounds'.

"I would urge all those who have reservations to be patient. Catríona Ruane has said that she is working to build an education system that will give every child a fair chance of achieving their full potential. Parents and educationalists know that restructuring an educational system that has been in use for over 40 years can not be achieved overnight.

"I am sure that most reasonable people would rather that the Minister takes the time to get it right rather than rush through something that turns out not to be equitable or fit for purpose in this evolving world.

"I would hope that the Lumen Christi Board of Governors will take cognizance of the Bishops message and reconsider its decision." ENDS
