Half of attacks on Orange Halls are non-sectarian
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithí McKay has reiterated his condemnation of attacks on Orange Halls but added that claims that there was an orchestrated campaign against Orange Order property have been dispelled by figures which the PSNI released at Mr McKay's request.
Mr McKay said:
"Many unionist politicians have tried to argue that there has been an orchestrated campaign against Orange halls, but I believe these figures clearly show that this is not the case.
"Undoubtedly there have been sectarian attacks on Orange halls, these are wrong and are to be condemned outright, but the PSNI themselves state there is no evidence of a concerted and co-ordinated campaign of targeting Orange halls.
"Nearly half of attacks on Orange Order property are non-sectarian in nature and I believe that at least some of these attacks have been carried out by anti-agreement Unionists who want to create further division and tension within this society, indeed I have been contacted by members of the Unionist community who inform me that this is the case.
"I will now be asking the Chief Constable to elaborate on the motivation behind non-sectarian attacks on Orange Halls, but let me make it very clear that all attacks on Orange Halls are wrong, and all of these attacks must be condemned." ENDS
