Report from Health Information and Quality Authority indictment of HSE – Ó Caoláin
Commenting on the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report on the Rebecca O'Malley case, Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhgín Ó Caoláin said:
"The HIQA report on the case of Rebecca O'Malley is an indictment of the HSE in particular. The HSE and ultimately the Department of Health and Children and the Government are responsible for the dysfunction in cancer services.
"HIQA identified serious issues with the way the HSE and the two hospitals concerned responded to Rebecca O'Malley's concerns. Her efforts to obtain information and redress were hampered by lack of an effective system to deal with such issues and one which puts the patient first. I have no confidence in the HSE at senior level in their overall management of cancer services, especially their policy of over-centralisation which will leave large swathes of the country without adequate access to services."
