Doolan challenges Beijing delegation on violence in Tibet
Dublin Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí Doolan speaking today in the Mansion House after meeting a delegation of politicians & businesses from Beijing, said he outlined to the delegation Sinn Féin's support for self determination for the people of Tibet.
Councillor Doolan went on to say that any further talks regarding the twinning of Beijing and Dublin City should be postponed until the situation in Tibet is resolved.
Cllr. Doolan said,
"I met the Beijing delegation to discuss the proposed twinning of the two capitals. I outlined in the strongest possible terms Sinn Féin's opposition to the ongoing killings and human rights abuses taking place in Tibet. The heavy handedness of the Chinese military forces in Tibet must cease immediately.
"Sinn Féin supports the right of the people of Tibet to self determination and we are extremely concerned at the current atmosphere and the heightened tensions which are causing much violence, anger and hurt. It is Sinn Féin's view that any further talks regarding the twinning of Beijing and Dublin City should be postponed until the situation in Tibet is resolved and I made this clear to the delegation and to the Chinese Embassador. It would be totally unacceptable to twin with Beijing at this time."
In conclusion, Cllr. Doolan demanded, "that Dublin's Lord Mayor invite the Chinese Ambassador to the Mansion House to meet with an all party delegation of Councillors to discuss the deteriorating situation in Tibet." ENDS
