More funding required for drugs awareness campaign – Ó Snodaigh

3 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has called on the Minister for State with responsibility for drugs Pat Carey TD to increase funding for drugs awareness campaigns. Speaking in the Dáil this afternoon Deputy Ó Snodaigh described the €2million currently being spent on awareness programmes as a dot in the ocean.

He said, "The €2 million currently being spent on drugs awareness campaigns is a dot in the ocean. The Minister launched this campaign in a blaze of glory in February and has made it a central tenet of his campaign against drugs yet the Government has failed to adequately fund it.

"The awareness campaign needs to be brought into the schools, into the sporting bodies, into the professional bodies with the use of shock tactics if necessary. For this to be achieved more funding must be provided.

"This campaign must also be backed up with adequate resources for garda drug squads and rehabilitation programmes." ENDS
