Anger and revulsion at brutal attack on Mountfield pensioner

3 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Councillor Declan Mc Aleer said that there is massive anger and revulsion in the local community at those who subjected an elderly woman to a brutal assault and burglary at her Killyclogher Road home in Mountfield last night.

He said,

"Those who brutally assaulted a woman of 82 years of age leaving her with broken ribs and head injuries, who dragged her to her bedroom, and who tied her ankles and hands before ransacking her home are cowards beneath contempt.

"I visited the family home this morning and her son said that she is deeply traumatised and her injuries severe. Everyones thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family at this time.

There is also massive anger and revulsion in the local community at those who perpetrated this crime combined with widespread fear, particularly among elderly people in the area, who feel that they are no longer safe in their homes.

"There have been a number of break-ins in the area in recent times but it is difficult, given the gravity of this attack, to say if they are related.

"As councillor for the area, I would call on the community to fully co-operate with the investigation into last night's dreadful deed so that those responsible can be brought to book as soon as possible. ENDS
