Gildernew addresses Farmers’ Union Anniversary dinner
Sinn Féin Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew MP, MLA has addressed members of the Ulster Farmers' Union (UFU) on the organisation's 90th anniversary.
The Minister took the opportunity to emphasise the need for establishing a close working relationship with the European Commission.
"Tonight has provided me with a valuable opportunity to access a broad range of agricultural stakeholders in one gathering. The UFU's contribution to local agriculture over the last 90 years stands proud and I am very thankful for all their efforts over the years to help the industry move forward, as it is only through working together that we can achieve the best results for our farmers.
"Since becoming Minister, one area which I have sought to improve is our relationship with Europe. It is essential that we continue to make the most of the support available in the years ahead and seek to strengthen our influence on the future direction of EU policies. I have now met Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel several times to discuss the issues that concern us, such as the CAP Health Check."
She also paid tribute to the ongoing work of the UFU leadership to benefit farming families.
