Sinn Féin MEP backs call for increased EU funding applications

8 April, 2008

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today backed a call for the six counties to tap into unexplioted EU grants.

Speaking before next week's visit of EU Regional Development Commissioner Danuta Huebner to Belfast, the Sinn Féin MEP has said,

"A Task Force report on the North of Ireland has shown that there is extra funding available for the North, although it is clear that we need to put some effort into making the rights applications.

"I would urge the Assembly to grasp this opportunity which has the potential to provide a greater focus on small businesses, the social economy, on combating discrimination, on sustainable development and on overcoming division.

"I also believe that increased EU funding for the six counties can also achieve the necessary all-Ireland synergies for an attractive all Ireland economy." Críoch
