Sinn Féin MEP supports call to end homelessness
Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has supported an EU level call to end homelessness.
Ms de Brún has added her support to the efforts of her party colleague Mary Lou Mc Donald who has organised and co-signed a declaration with 4 other MEPs for signature by the European Parliament's MEPs.
Speaking from Brussels Ms de Brún said,
"We are seeking an EU-wide agreed commitment to end street homelessness by 2015. I would call on the Assembly to act on such a commitment and to encorporate "winter emergency plans" as part of a wider homeless strategy. Street homelessness is the most visible aspect of homelessness and must be tackled as part of a wider strategy to tackle all aspects of homelessness.
"Last year 21,013 households presented as homeless to the NIHE. Almost half of those who apply to the NIHE as homeless are assessed as meeting the legal criteria i.e. are 'unintentionally homeless' and in 'priority need'."
If a majority of 392 MEPs sign, the declaration on street homelessness will become adopted as an official working European Parliament position. The written declaration has achieved 371 signatures of the parliament's 785 MEPs to date.
