Dublin cocaine seizure welcomed – Ó Snodaigh

10 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Justice Spokesperson Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has welcomed the seizure of €2million worth of cocaine and the arrest of four men in Dublin this morning. Deputy Ó Snodaigh again repeated his call for the resources allocated the Garda Drug Squads to be at least doubled.

He said, "I want to congratulate those officers involved in this morning's operation which resulted in the seizure of €2million worth of cocaine and the arrest of four men. This was a highly successful operation and a massive blow to the dealers involved.

"While the Garda Drug Squads are doing an good job and seizures are up this can be put down, in the main, to the increased amounts of drugs that are now getting into the country. The cocaine epidemic has now swept across every town in the state. This needs to be tackled head on with adequate resources.

"It has been acknowledged that members of Drug Squads are often diverted by Garda management into other areas of work to cover staff shortages. This is unacceptable. The drugs crisis is the biggest threat to our communities and to society as a whole and it must be tackled at full strength by the Gardaí.

"While the drugs awareness campaign is a worthwhile initiative it can only be one element of a much wider approach to tackling drugs. Funds must be made available to implement all five pillars of the National Drugs Strategy.

"I have repeatedly called for the resources for the Garda Drug Squads to be at least doubled so that we can at least give the Gardaí a fighting chance against the drug barons. I am making that call again today." ENDS
