Huge investment announcement welcomed
Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP has welcomed today's announcement by the New York City Comptroller William Thompson of a major investment by New York pension funds in the north's economic infrastructure.
The Sinn Fein leader paid a warm tribute to the efforts of Mr. Thompson and to the Comptroller's office with whom he was in contact on this project in recent months.
Mr. Adams said:
"I have met William Thompson and his predecessors many times to brief them and to lobby them for support for investment, including on this project.
"Mr. Thompson and the Comptroller's office has been particularly active and supportive over many years around the MacBride Principles campaign and ensuring that US investment is linked to fairness, prosperity and justice and the tackling of economic and social inequality.
"I want to especially welcome Mr. Thompson's commitment that the investment announced today will be used to promote sustainable development, and equality of opportunity.
"Sinn Fein's endeavours to secure inward investment are geared towards improving the economic condition of those who have been disadvantaged by patterns of historic discrimination.
"The announcement today by the Comptroller's office of a $150 million investment, the largest ever public investment from the USA into the north, is also a much welcome boost on the eve of the May Investment Conference.
"The ability of the pension funds investment and of our Investment Conference in May to deliver real economic improvement will be best delivered by those investors who prioritise sustainable economic investment in partnership with sustainable social economic investment. For example, by ensuring that the promotion of equality of opportunity is built into the language and practice of contracts and tenders. " ENDS
