Sinn Féin welcomes launch of Task Force report
Speaking before the launch of the EU Task Force report for the six counties, Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brún said:
"Following the commitment of president Barosso to establish a Taskforce there has been an extensive engagement with the Commission. I am encouraged that after many months of hard work the EU Task Force will report on how we can further partnership working with Europe to consolidate peace, equality and prosperity.
"The report identifies a real opportunity to boost our economy in areas of environmental sustainability and renewable energy, as we at home, along with other countries rise to meet the challenge of climate change.
"I would encourage the Executive to pursue the recommendations of the report to build innovation, and economic growth. The report highlights the willingness and the opportunities for growth that Europe offers.
"The Assembly should look not only at EU funding programmes we have benefited from to date but also at making further use of the European Investment Bank which gives loans at competitive rates and which has already helped finance the Coolkeeragh Power Station and the BGE gas interconnector.
"However this partnership is not just one way. In Ireland we have much to share with the world of our experience of tackling discrimination, and conflict resolution and transformation. I believe that this experience would be of benefit to areas of conflict within Europe and globally." ENDS
