Shock at West Belfast rape

14 April, 2008

West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann condemned this weekend's rape of a young woman in Colin Glen Forest Park.

Ms McCann said:

"I'm absolutely appalled to hear about this attack and I'd firstly like to say that my thoughts and the thoughts of this community are with this young woman. It is a horrendous crime and the fact that it happened in broad daylight has shocked everyone.

"A number of people have contacted me to express revulsion that this happened to a visitor to the area and they want this young woman to know that the person who carried out this attack is in no way representative of their community.

"The perpetrator of this vile crime must be apprehended immediately and held to account and I would appeal to anyone who has any information to pass it on to the PSNI immediately. While he is still out there he is a danger to everyone.

"All of us have a responsibility to ensure those who carry out the crime of rape and sexual assault are taken off our streets and face lengthy prison sentences that reflect the seriousness of their crime and the devastation they bring to the lives of their victims and their victims families.

"We also have a responsibility to ensure that parks and public areas are safe for people to use." ENDS
