Doherty welcomes official announcement that Altnagelvin is to be location for North West Satellite Cancer Centre
Sinn Féin West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty has welcomed confirmation by Health Minister Michael Mc Gimpsey in the Assembly yesterday afternoon that Altnagelvin is to be the location for a Satellite Cancer Centre in the North West part of Ireland but is once again questioning why the people on the region should have to wait until after 2015 before this Centre becomes operational.
After listening to the Minister's announcement in the Assembly yesterday afternoon Mr Doherty, who has been to the forefront of the campaign to get radiotherapy services located in the North West, said,
"I welcome today's announcement in so much that it now makes official what I have been told in correspondence with the Minister and also welcome the fact that he has now mandated the Western Board and Trust to prepare an urgent business case in preparation for this development.
However, I would once again question why the Minister does not envisage the Satellite Cancer Centre becoming operation before 2015. While I understand the need for extensive planning to be carried out I think that if the political will exists on both sides of the border then the envisaged timescale could be substantially brought forward.
