Sinn Féin voice grave concern on potential land tax

17 April, 2008

Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Pat Doherty has voiced grave concern on any potential land tax on land which is let under the conacre system.

He said,

"A startling 40% of farms are rented under the conacre system.

"To introduce a 40% inheritance tax on this land, which is usually inherited tax free would have a drastic effect on local farmers.

"The effect on rural communities would be immence and HM Revenue and Customs special commissioners must take account of this.

"If the six counties had our own fiscal autonomy we would not have these issues burdened on us.

"The difficulty lies in tax being a reserved matter.

"I call on the tax authorities to review this immediately and Sinn Féin will continue to voice concern over this land tax." Críoch
